Cover Card - When we are reading, it is important for us to think about not just decoding the words on the page, but understanding what we are reading. The cover card below includes some sentence starters to help us think about what we are reading. As good readers, we do not stop after every sentence to make sure our understanding is perfect, but when we are practicing reading together, we can use these cover cards to practice and get better at different comprehension skills.

Reading Comprehension Strategies
Step 1: Read the paragraph (or chunk of text) out loud, in full.
Step 2: Read each sentence one at a time, out loud. After each sentence, use your ITTM (I think this means...) sentence starters or one of the other comprehension sentence starters.
Step 3: After reading, go back and clear up any misconceptions or road blocks.
Our first goal is to enjoy reading, so please don't spend the whole time you read practicing comprehension strategies. That said, it is always helpful to take time every now and then to master looking deeper into a piece of text.
Sentence Starters - Sometimes when have finished reading a large part of a book, or when we have finished a story altogether, we will use different reading comprehension strategies like Predicting, Determining Importance, Summarizing, Evaluating, or Synthesizing. Below are the posters showing those comprehension strategies and some sentence starters that might help us for each.
